So it's almost midnight and I'm exhausted but I'm devoted to this blog and I'm sticking it out. Appreciate it, damnit! Anyway a brief overview of my last 48 hours:
Fairly uneventful travel (though I sat next to the couple from The Poisonwood Bible- older couple from alabama working as missionaries in mozambique, with four children who they raised there) got through the airport alright (though, it being me, I waited through like 3 different wrong passport lines before finding the right one).
Got into the dorm, unpacked, and while lost and looking for a bathroom in my maze of a hallway, stumbled across 3 other study abroad kids. We went to dinner at the dining hall (Wolfson is the only catered residence, boo ya! Though it's also the only one that's an hour walk from campus...that ones just boo) and ran into a bunch of other study abroad kids. 19 in total, all very nice and friendly. Also found 3 vet students who took me and another kid to Tesco, where I discovered 1) that travelators are escalators except without steps...they're flat! (factoid!) and that 2) Tesco has an awesome gluten free selection. MUFFINS!
Oh speaking of food, funny dinner story: I spoke to the dining guy about the whole celiacs thing "Hi! I'm going to be a pain in your butt for the next 5 months! My name is Erin." and he was really nice and offerred something and I didn't understand him (thick thick scottish accent, which I learned that I can't always understand) so I just kind of smiled and said "that sounds lovely!". A minute later, he came back with a plate empty except for being half covered in grated cheese. Accent understanding fail.
Today was crazy- orientation and silly meet-people games and getting lost and a brief scare about not being approved for my neuro classes. But it all worked out. Went to a "social event" and then a bunch of us from Wolfson went to a pub for a bit. And now my internet works! Went on skype and said hi to mama bear and the sister cubs. Yes, that's what I just referred to you guys as. I'm tired. OH! Speaking of cubs, picture for the day (didn't have time for any campus pics, but they're on their way).
Kip, and two stowaways that mysteriously made it into my luggage. Having sisters is awesome. |
